Alabama Day Book Talk: These Rugged Days by John Sledge
Join us at the Archives on December 14, Alabama's 198th birthday, for a special Book Talk presented by John S. Sledge. He will discuss his new book "These Rugged Days: Alabama in the Civil War" beginning at noon. Admission is free.
Sledge's book presents the riveting narrative of Alabama’s Civil War saga. Through impressive primary sources including journals, sketches, and photographs, These Rugged Days portrays some of Alabama’s most colorful Civil War-era characters, including John Pelham, Gus Askew, and Jane Evans. The book is an enthralling tale of action, courage, pride, and tragedy, making clear the relevance of many of the Civil War’s decisive moments for the way Alabamians live today. In this presentation, Sledge will provide a refreshing take on Alabama’s contributions to the Civil War that will intrigue anyone interested in learning more about the state’s war efforts.
John S. Sledge is senior architectural historian for the Mobile Historic Development Commission and a member of the National Book Critics Circle. He is author of numerous books, including "Cities of Silence, A Guide to Mobile’s Historic Cemeteries," and "The Mobile River."
