Book Talk: The Shadow Tiger
During the week of Veterans Day 2017, the Archives will offer noontime book talks focused on military history. Today's book is The Shadow Tiger by William McDonald III.
William McDonald III’s book recounts the remarkable story of his father, providing readers a firsthand account of Captain Billy “Mac” McDonald’s experiences as a captain in World War II. A career that began at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery took Capt. McDonald to General Claire Chennault’s famed aerobatic flying group: “Three Men on a Flying Trapeze.” McDonald worked extensively with Chennault’s Flying Tigers, but he also served as a combat pilot, trained Chinese pilots, and made hundreds of life-saving flights through the Himalayas.
Through painstaking work, McDonald compiled his father’s nearly 30,000 documents, letters, and photos into this remarkable account. Through letters sent home every two weeks, Capt. McDonald’s papers provide priceless eyewitness documentation of a significant portion of military history.
