520 l6th Street North | Birmingham, AL 35203 205-328-9696 The story of Birmingham’s role in the nation’s Civil Rights Movement has been told and retold by countless sources around the world. With the opening of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in l992, Birmingham tells its own story. Exhibits in the institute portray the struggle for civil rights in Birmingham and across the nation. Displays and multi-media presentations join music and storytelling to depict historical events, from life in the l920’s through current race relations. The institute is designed as a scholarly resource center for education and research. The building is located on the corner of l6th Street and 6th Avenue North, (directly across from the legendary Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, site of the tragic bombing in l963), and Kelly Ingram Park, assembly point for marches, demonstrations, rallies and prayer services during the l960s. 11:15 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church
l530 6th Avenue North | Birmingham, AL 35203 205-25l-9402 Birmingham’s most famous Civil Rights landmark, this church was bombed by Klansmen on September l5, l963. The blast killed four young girls preparing for morning worship service. Built in l9ll, the church had been a stage for many of the civil rights protests in the turbulent years of the early l960’s. A stained glass window in the church was sent by the nation of Wales as a memorial to the slain children. Tour Time: lhr.

And that’s just one of Birmingham’s many contributions to the world of jazz. The Jazz Hall of Fame exhibits memorabilia in the historic, Art Deco Carver Theatre. Tour Time: 45mins.
