15 Events to Celebrate Labor Day Weekend in Alabama |

Montgomery, Ala. — A Civil War battle, home-grown food and animals highlight Labor Day weekend activities across Alabama in 2011.
Butterbeans, sweet potatoes, moon pies and barbeque are some of the foods families can sink their teeth into over the weekend. Fresh vegetables abound at the Butterbean Festival in Pinson and the Sweet Tater Festival in Cullman. A moon pie eatin’ contest is the highlight of the Labor Day Celebration at Tannehill Ironworks Historical Park in McCalla.
Families can also celebrate animal-themed events such as the Labor Day Celebration at the Coon Dog Cemetery where hunting dogs are honored, graves are decorated and tall tales are swapped in the “Liars Contest.” The Labor Day Dog Show in Guntersville offers contests for “man’s best friend” while Ider offers a parade of mules, horses and carriages.
The Alabama Tourism Department suggests the following Labor Day weekend events with family fun in mind.
September 3, Guntersville 41st Annual St. William Seafood Festival Feast on St. William’s famous seafood that includes Creole-style gumbo, Cajun boiled shrimp and fresh crawfish. September 2-5, Luverne World’s Largest Peanut Boil Festival Enjoy arts, crafts, children’s activities, sweets and plenty of boiled peanuts. More than 17 tons of peanuts will be cooked. Admission charged. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information: 334.335.4468, www.crenshawcounty.net.
September 2-3, Pinson Alabama Butterbean Festival The annual Butterbean Festival celebrates with a day’s worth of exciting events including a butterbean and cornbread cooking contest on Historic Pinson Main Street. Enjoy more than 200 arts, crafts, and food booths, the Tail Waggin’ Dog Pageant, greased pig contest, the Mr. and Miss Butterbean Pageant, and live entertainment. September 4, Guntersville Labor Day Dog Show Bring out your “best friend” and enter contests for biggest, smallest, best dressed, most talented, fluffiest, youngest and oldest. September 4-5, Crane Hill Sweet Tater Festival The annual Sweet tater Festival takes place in Dowling Memorial Park in Crane Hill. September 5, Tuscumbia Coon Dog Cemetery Labor Day Celebration More than 200 Coon Dogs are buried at the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Cemetery, the only one of its kind in the world. Each year on Labor Day, “faithful friends” are remembered, their graves decorated, and tall tales are swapped in the “Liars Contest.” Visitors can enjoy bluegrass music and hickory-smoked barbecue.
