MONTGOMERY, Ala.---Old Alabama Town has Cigar Box Guitars on display now in the reception center lobby. The guitars are made locally and are a growing fad among roots music lovers.
On February 25th starting at 3:30 p.m., a festival and book signing will take place at Old Alabama Town with a concert at 6:30 p.m. featuring the “Nadaband” from Decatur. Bill Jehle is the author of “One Man’s Trash: A History of the Cigar Box Guitar” and is the bands leader. Jehle will be around all afternoon to chat with people about his hobby.
Jehle wants to spread his enthusiasm about these guitars across Alabama and the region. He says the instruments are meant for playing so guitars will be available for participants to try their hand at playing one. View videos on www.youtube.com of Jehle building and playing his guitars by searching for Bill Jehle.
Alabama Roots Music Society has partnered with Old Alabama Town to put together this festival and promote music, especially roots music in Montgomery. This event also falls into Alabama’s “Year of Music” theme.
“These instruments bring us back to a time of handmade items and being resourceful with objects. The cigar box guitar dates back to the 1860s,” said Carole King, curator of the Cigar Box Guitar Exhibit.
The exhibit is available for viewing now until February 26th in the reception center at 301 Columbus Street. It is free to view the exhibit but Old Alabama Town offers self guided tours Monday through Saturday for an admission.
The concert portion starts at 6:30 p.m. and is $5 for admission. Refreshments are included during this time. From 3:30-6:30 p.m. the festival is free to the public. For more information call 334.240.4500 or visit www.oldalabamatown.com
