Rosa Parks Library and Museum & Children’s Wing
The museum is a major landmark in the revitalization of downtown Montgomery. The museum is located on the site of the old Empire Theatre where Mrs. Parks began her courageous and historic stand in l 955. The museum features a recreated street scene and replica of the bus, while video footage transports visitors to the fateful day. Additional exhibits lead visitors on an emotional journey through the days of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which became the first step on the often difficult path to Civil Rights in America.
The Children's Wing provides an experience that is much more child focused and tailored specifically for their age and comprehension abilities. Through the use of multi-media presentations via a "Time Machine," the Children's Wing prepares visitors for the museum reenactment experience involving Rosa Parks, activities of Martin Luther King, Jr., and involvement of other early Civil Rights leaders. Exclusive to this museum, the scholar's research area captures Montgomery's history and Civil Rights history including artifacts, oral histories, historical documents, and art for high school students and adults.
