A Kid Like Jake
Alex Wheeler and her husband, Greg, are trying to find the right primary school for their 4-year-old son, Jake, but competition is high and money is low. Jake's adviser suggest they play up Jake's gender-expansiveness to appeal to the schools' sense of diversity. But as Jake ventures away from the world where everyone has always accepted his love of dressing up and fairy tales, he recognizes that many people think something is wrong with him. As Jake becomes increasingly confused about who he is and who he should be, he starts acting out more and more. His increasingly erratic behavior starts to cause a rift between the couple. Alex worries that the adults in her son's life are labeling him prematurely, while Greg wonders if Jake's fondness for dressing up might be more than just a phase.
As they struggle to navigate their roles as parents, Alex and Greg begin to see that they are not only confronting their concerns about what's best for Jake, but also trying to save the bond they have with each other. The story of a husband and wife struggling to do right by their son, A Kid Like Jake is a study of intimacy and parenthood and the fantasies that accompany both.
