August Wilson, one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century, has made a lasting impact on theatre in America. In a powerful, stunning dramatic work, “Troy Maxson has gone through life in a country where to be proud and black was to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul.” A former star of the Negro baseball leagues who was excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, he now works as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Troy's bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son as he struggles to find his place in frightening world. Fences explores the issues of racial segregation, socially and economically, as well as the heart of a family: fathers and sons, husbands and wives, dreams deferred, and hopes for the future.
