First Friday Street Dining on Dexter will bring free, family-friendly fun to Court Square

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

MONTGOMERY – The City of Montgomery will partner with the Downtown Business Association to launch First Friday Street Dining on Dexter from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 2 around the Court Square Fountain.

The event aims to increase vibrancy and attract more activity to downtown Montgomery in support of local businesses by offering outdoor seating for patrons of downtown restaurants, free live music, art vendors, a cruise-in and more.

Similar to Food Truck Fridays, the First Friday Street Dining on Dexter series stems from Mayor Steven L. Reed’s vision for the continued revitalization of downtown through strategic placemaking efforts that include new events, activities and experiences that cater to a diverse range of residents and visitors.

Over the past six weeks, the City celebrated the completion of renovations at Rotary Park with its Food Truck Fridays event series in a safe, responsible and socially-distanced way. The Rotary Park food truck parking spots and tables are open for public use every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Plans are in the works to bring outdoor street dining to Commerce Street later this fall.

Pedestrian-forward planning and programming has proven to be instrumental in enhancing quality of place and quality of life in cities, large and small, across the country. It also increases foot-traffic and the potential for more customers. This approach also aligns with recommendations in the Montgomery United Transition Report and the Envision Montgomery 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

Officials anticipate Friday’s event to be a big boost for business downtown as recovery continues from the economic impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing, masks or face covering and other COVID-19 public health orders will be enforced.
